A. The Monument
Here on Piper’s Hill is the best place to view the battlefield from the English perspective. This is where the English Centre Division under the command of the Earl of Surrey’s elder son, the Lord Admiral was placed. To our right was the English Vanguard, commanded by Edmund Howard, Surrey’s younger son. Behind us were Dacre’s Borderers, light cavalry or hobelars, and some distance to our left, in overall command, the Earl of Surrey.
Surrey had broken camp before dawn and had marched from Barmoor in an outflanking move almost to the Scottish Border, and crossed the River Till to approach the battlefield from the north.
The Scots encamped on Flodden Hill and expecting an attack from the south, now had to move in great haste to redeploy directly ahead along the crest of Branxton Hill
(See the nearby compass map for the armies’ routes and approach to the Battlefield)
⇒ Return to the bench near the top of the line of steps and follow the grass path left towards Braxton Hill to the two information boards.
