The Battle of Flodden

The Boggy Ground

It was here, in this boggy valley that the bloodiest fighting and greatest numbers of casualties occurred. Despite the modern drainage ditch this area sill floods in wet weather, often to a depth of several feet.

The photograph shows water flowing from the spring line at the top of the line of oak trees and there is a further spring line about three quarters of the way down the hill, both adding to the muddy conditions here in the valley.

After a wet winter it is often impossible to cut the grass on the Battlefield Trail until mid-June due to the slippery and muddy ground conditions.
